Nawaya is an iconic name in the world of shibari, known for producing some of the most acclaimed ropes among shibari artists worldwide.

Since 1999, Japanese rope manufacturer Nawaya has specialised in ropes for shibari, kinbaku, and Japanese rope bondage, focusing on quality, durability, and functionality.

At Ropes & Riggers, we import our Nawaya ropes directly from Japan ourselves. This ensures that you get the original quality directly from the manufacturer, before each rope is prepared and hand-treated by us.

Nawaya reb er et japansk jutereb (麻縄). Asanawa er den japanske betegnelse for naturfiberreb, brugt i shibari og kinbaku for deres organiske greb, levende tekstur og tætte forbindelse til rebets håndværk.

The rope is braided from three cords with eight yarns each, providing a tighter and more compact structure than many other asanawa ropes. When new, the Nawaya feels firmer and more controlled, but with use, it gradually develops its full softness, thickness, and flexibility.

A standard, new, and dry 6 mm Nawaya asanawa jute rope has a theoretical breaking strength of approx. 150 to 200 kg (1.5 - 2.0 kN) per rope.

The Nawaya Reb is available in both 8 metres and 10 metres, making it suitable for smaller rigs, floor work, and more complex full-body setups.

This pink version adds a more vibrant and playful visual expression to the rope.

In Japanese symbolism, pink is associated with youth, tenderness, romance, and the fleeting beauty of life, often inspired by the cherry blossom's (sakura) short but intense bloom.

This makes pink Nawaya a rope that can create both soft contrasts and strong visual statements.

Nawaya rope is 100% JBO-free, which gives it a cleaner and more natural scent without the strong chemical odour often found in industrial jute rope.

At Ropes & Riggers, each rope is flame-scorched to remove loose fibres and treated with our own rope paste based on cold-pressed tsubaki oil and Danish beeswax. This results in a smoother surface, better glide, and a more comfortable feel against the skin.

Break strength disclaimer

The breaking strength is stated as a theoretical reference value based on new, dry and unused rope.

As jute is a natural material, variations in the fibres, moisture content, wear and tear, knots, the direction of stress and ongoing use can significantly affect the rope’s actual strength.

The breaking strength therefore cannot be guaranteed over the entire length of the rope or throughout its lifespan.

Ropes & Riggers always recommends that ropes are thoroughly inspected before use, and that suspension or load-bearing ties are only carried out by persons with experience, knowledge and understanding of the material's limitations.
