Synthetic Ropes

Colourful, durable and practical ropes for Shibari and Kinbaku.

Jute rope for shibari and kinbaku

Synthetic ropes are a popular alternative to jute, offering completely different colours, properties, and aesthetics. They require minimal maintenance, dry quickly, and are suitable for everything from daily training to shows and water Shibari.

At Ropes & Riggers you'll find both our colourful POSH ropes and Hempex ropes with a more classic hemp look, so you can choose the rope that best suits your style.

“Synthetic ropes offer the freedom to tie without worrying about maintenance – and at the same time, they open the door to colours, water and entirely new expressions.”

POSH Rope

POSH is a soft and pliable synthetic rope made from polypropylene multifilament.

Reels come in many colours, including UV-active variants, which glow under ultraviolet light. This makes POSH suitable for shows, photography, parties and other events where colours are welcome to be a bit more prominent.

POSH is quick-drying, low-maintenance, and can be used for water shibari. The rope is available in 6mm and in lengths of 8 and 10 metres.

Which synthetic rope should you choose?

Choose Hempex if you prefer a more classic and natural look, but still want the benefits of a synthetic rope.

If you prefer the feel, scent and texture of natural rope, why not take a look at our range of [[INTERNAL LINK → Jute Rope for Shibari & Kinbaku]].

Why choose synthetic ropes?

Synthetic ropes require less maintenance than natural ropes and are not affected in the same way by water and moisture.

They are therefore particularly relevant for:

  • Water Shibari
  • Performances and shows
  • Photography
  • Frequent training
  • Outdoor use
  • You who wish for colourful ropes
  • For those of you who prefer minimal rope maintenance

Synthetic ropes have a different friction and feel to jute. It is therefore important to learn the properties of the rope and adapt your knots accordingly.

Jute or synthetic rope?

The choice between jute and synthetic ropes isn’t about which is best, but about which properties you want.

Jute is the classic choice for shibari and kinbaku. Many people choose jute because of the rope’s natural texture, distinctive scent and the friction it provides, which creates a very special experience during the tying process. At Ropes & Riggers, you’ll find several different types of jute, including  Signature Jute Rope, Ogawa Jute and Nawaya Jute.

Synthetic ropes have their own advantages. They require minimal maintenance, dry quickly, and are available in a wide range of colours. This makes them popular for activities such as water shibari, shows, photography, and for those of you who want an easy-to-maintain rope.

There isn’t a single rope that suits everyone. In fact, many people choose to keep both jute and synthetic ropes in their rope bag, so they can choose the rope that’s best suited to each particular knot or situation.
