Build a secure and flexible rope setup using quality equipment
A good suspension setup consists of more than ropes, rings and karabiners. Slings, swivels and other hardware help to create a safe, flexible and functional setup where all parts work together.
At Ropes & Riggers you will find a selection of hardware that can be combined with our carabiners, suspension rings and rope, allowing you to put together a setup that suits your needs.
.
“A good setup isn't about the most parts. It's about the right ones.”
Slings
A sling is used to establish a secure connection point around a suitable anchor. It acts as a connecting link between the anchor point and the rest of your hardware, and is a fixed part of many suspension setups.
Swivels
A swivel allows free rotation and can reduce twisting in your setup. It is used between hardware components and provides greater freedom of movement during suspension.
Other hardware
Not all hardware fits into one specific category.
The selection is continually expanded with new hardware, chosen with a focus on quality, function and durability.
How the parts fit together
A suspension setup often consists of several components, each of which has its own function.
A typical setup could look like this:
Anchor point → Sling → Karabiner → Swivel → Suspension ring → Rope
Which parts you need depends on your anchor point, the way you tie and the setup you want to build.
How do you choose the right hardware?
The right hardware depends on how your setup is going to be used.
A sling is used to create the connection to the anchor point. A carabiner makes it easy to assemble the equipment, while a swivel allows for free rotation. The suspension ring gathers the ropes and acts as the centre in many suspension setups.
There is rarely one right solution. Many build their setup up step by step and choose the components that suit their needs.
Maintenance
Check your hardware regularly for wear, deformation or other damage.
Pay particular attention to:
- Worn or damaged slings.
- Karabiners with damage or defective locking mechanisms.
- Swivels that no longer rotate freely.
- Signs of corrosion or abnormal wear.
If a component shows signs of damage or does not function correctly, it should be replaced.
Frequently asked questions about slings, swivels and hardware
What is a sling used for?
A sling is used to create a secure connection point around a suitable anchor and acts as the link between the anchor point and the rest of your hardware.
What is a swivel?
A swivel is a rotating connecting link that allows free rotation and can reduce twisting in a suspension setup.
What hardware do I need?
Yes.
It depends on your setup. Many combine a sling, a carabiner, a swivel and a suspension ring to create a flexible solution.
What does WLL mean?
WLL (Working Load Limit) is the maximum working load recommended by the manufacturer. This is the value you should base your calculations on during normal use.
What is breaking strength?
The breaking strength is the load at which a product is expected to fail during laboratory testing. It is not the same as the recommended working load.
Should hardware be checked before use?
Yes. Always check the hardware for wear, deformation, cracks or other damage, and replace components that show signs of weakness.
